In today’s environmentally conscious world, power conservation and carbon reduction issues are ever increasing. Many nations are even beginning to regulate such activities, and certainly such activities would benefit the larger nations most of all. Back in 2004, the Chinese government announced an energy initiative that mapped out a carbon reduction goal as part of the nation’s Five Yea Plan, China’s national guidelines for economic and social development. Under that plan, China hoped to reduce 20% of their per unit GDP energy consumption by the end of 2010. It’s an aggressive plan to be sure, but one that seems to be succeeding so far.

Summary: There can be too much of a good thing, or so goes the old saying. Fortunately, new technology can come to the rescue, at least in certain cases. For example, an industrial enterprise can grow too big for efficient automation control using traditional technology. However, advances in industrial Ethernet can provide a solution, if such techniques as smart remote I/O and peer-to-peer technology are implemented. The result could be better and more flexible control, along with a change in the way Ethernet is used. This white paper discusses the benefits of Smart I/O and Peer-to-Peer Technology.

Network Infrastructure for Metro System in Brazil
Date: 7/3/2009

Facility Management
Location: Brazil

Project Introduction:
A network infrastructure is the heart of any communications system, and includes all of the routers, switches, wireless access points, access methods and protocols needed to operate a modern enterprise. The Metro system in Brazil was looking to upgrade their existing network, and turned to Advantech for the necessary products and know-how. Their main central control center needed a system to monitor and control the communication quality, and required products compatible with their digital analyzers.

System Requirements:
Because the infrastructure of the information layer is Ethernet-based, the digital analyzer must be equipped with an RS-485 to Ethernet device server. The central control center needs to read data from the analyzers for management through Ethernet. In order to ensure the system performs reliability, the communication can’t be interrupted, so redundant communications are required.

The Metro system itself has many high voltage wires for the trains, so there is a lot of interference. Moreover, the communications have to travel very long distances, which creates installation, maintenance and operation issues. To meet these demands the system must be designed with advanced protection and remote configuration capabilities.

Project Implementation:

EKI-1522

2-port RS-232/422/485 Serial Device Server

System Diagram:

System Description:
EKI-1522's has two RS-485 ports, providing redundancy for the system. Through RS-485, the digital analyzer is connected to EKI-1522 at each remote site, while a PC is connected to another EKI-1522 in the main control room to achieve remote configuration capabilities. The EKI-1522 is also designed with two 10/100Mbps ports for LAN redundancy.

Conclusion:
The functionality, quality, reliability and excellent design of EKI-1522 made it a great fit for this project, helping create a reliable communications infrastructure.
